In the last article “THE DANGER OF COMPARISON”, we talked about the dangers of comparison because it can lead to a mindset of constant judgment.

We discussed that when kids see themselves as “better than” others, it creates arrogance and entitlement and can lead to conceitedness, bullying, and discrimination. We also discussed that when kids see themselves as “less than” it erodes self-esteem as they enter a world of self-criticism and self-doubt.

It is critical that we teach our kids how to honor their own uniqueness, gifts, and talents. Differences are what make them unique. Whether it’s their personality, interests, or talents, their unique skills are a gift and an opportunity to contribute to the world. The world needs us all to thrive.

Here are some questions to help your kids understand the importance of honoring their unique gifts and talents:

  • What would happen if everyone was great at art and wanted to become an artist and no one wanted to become a doctor?
  • What would happen if everyone was great at sports and wanted to become an athlete and no one wanted to be a construction worker?
  • What would happen if everyone was great at math and wanted to become an engineer and no one wanted to be a farmer?
  • What would happen if everyone was great at science and wanted to become a researcher and no one wanted to become a teacher?

Ask your kids what makes them unique?

What are their gifts and talents?

Have them interview five other people about what they enjoy and what makes them unique. Help them see that everyone is different and special in their own way.

For humans to survive, we need everyone’s talents and gifts. We need people who are good at art, people who are good at sports, people who are good at building things, people who are good at growing things, people who are good at teaching things, and people who are good at healing others. We need all kinds of people and all types of talent! And that includes them!

Honoring their own uniqueness is the greatest gift they can give themselves. It will enable them to step into who they are and take pride in being themselves (besides…everyone else is already taken).
